Haiti Earthquake - One Year Later

One year ago disaster struck Haiti. A friend of mine, Donna Thiessen, was on the road in Port au Prince when the earthquake struck. She was one of the speakers at the Fall Enrichment Day of Mennonite Women of Eastern Canada on October 26, 2010 and shared her story with the women who attended. If you would like to read about her experience please click here.

Immediately following the January 12, 2010 earthquake, donations totaling $14.1 million began to pour in for Mennonite Central Committee's
disaster response. In addition, within the next month, MCC distributed material resources, such as relief kits, comforters and canned meat valued to $3.1 million. If you would like to read more about how these funds are being allocated please check out the MCC web site.

In an effort to encourage continued commitment to a healthy and hopeful future for Haiti, a benefit concert featuring Kevin Coates and The Interesting People is being held at Floradale Mennonite Church (22 Florapine Rd. Floradale, ON) on January 29 starting at 7:30 pm
. No admission. A free will offering will be taken in support of MCC's long term capacity building in rural Haiti.

2011 Season of Prayer: Faith and Hope in the Face of Changing Times by Dan Epp-Tiessen, Mennonite Church Canada, 2010.

Our annual five-session study/worship resource; this year with the following themes:

In the Face of Change: If we as Christians are rooted in our story, remain God-centered, sort out our loyalties, and live as a covenant people, then we can confidently face changing times.

Bless the LORD, O My Soul: One of the most important things we as a church do in any time and place is to offer our joyous and heartfelt praise to God.

Nurturing a Spirit of Resistance: As God’s people, we owe our primary allegiance to God. Therefore, in changing times we are called to nurture a discerning spirit of resistance to the world.

Living between Reality and Hope: Our calling is to live between acceptance of some of the painful realities of life, and the hope we have that with God new things are possible.

Nothing Can Separate Us . . . : No matter what crises we face either individually or collectively, the Bible assures us that there is nothing in all of creation that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Recipe for a Wonderful New Year

Take 12 whole months.
Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness, hate, and jealousy.
Make them just as fresh and clean as possible.
Now cut each month into 28, 30 or 31 parts,

but don't make up the whole batch at once.
Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients:
Mix well into each day one part of faith,
one part of patience, one part of courage, and one part of work.

Add to each day one part of hope, faithfulness, generosity, and kindness.
Blend with one part prayer, one part meditation, and one good deed.
Season the whole with a dash of good spirits, a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play,
and a cupful of good humour.
Pour all of this into a vessel of love.
Cook thoroughly over radiant joy, garnish with a smile,
and serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness.
