One year ago disaster struck Haiti. A friend of mine, Donna Thiessen, was on the road in Port au Prince when the earthquake struck. She was one of the speakers at the Fall Enrichment Day of Mennonite Women of Eastern Canada on October 26, 2010 and shared her story with the women who attended. If you would like to read about her experience please click here.
Immediately following the January 12, 2010 earthquake, donations totaling $14.1 million began to pour in for Mennonite Central Committee's disaster response. In addition, within the next month, MCC distributed material resources, such as relief kits, comforters and canned meat valued to $3.1 million. If you would like to read more about how these funds are being allocated please check out the MCC web site.
In an effort to encourage continued commitment to a healthy and hopeful future for Haiti, a benefit concert featuring Kevin Coates and The Interesting People is being held at Floradale Mennonite Church (22 Florapine Rd. Floradale, ON) on January 29 starting at 7:30 pm. No admission. A free will offering will be taken in support of MCC's long term capacity building in rural Haiti.
