Mennonite Women dissolve national ministry

With tears, hugs and 67 years of memories, participants at the Mennonite Women Canada annual luncheon meeting, held on June 30, said goodbye to each other and to their national organization.
With the theme for the afternoon, “To everything a season,” members recognized the season had come for ending the nationwide women’s body. Declining attendance in individual women’s groups, the restructuring of Mennonite Church Canada to shift responsibilities and resources to regional churches, and the dissolution of MC Canada’s five regional women’s groups all contributed to the change.
“As the seasons of our lives have changed, so have the projects of Mennonite Women Canada,” said president Shirley Redekop. “It has been a time of growth—of spring and summer—and now, Mennonite Women Canada has moved into its autumn and winter, a quieter season.”
Participants accepted the proposal to dissolve the nationwide ministry by the fiscal year end, Jan. 31, 2020. Approval was given to lift any restrictions on funds and to distribute the balance to regional women’s ministries. Financial assets will be distributed by Jan. 31. MW Canada hopes the money will support the dreams and visions for present and future women’s ministries.
Executive team members expressed their gratitude to those who had gone before, citing an April 29 “Connections” article: “We are thankful for the vision and commitment of women in the past who served their church locally, provincially and nationally. We are also thankful for the support of women’s groups across the country who continue to nurture and minister to others across the street and around the world, accomplishing much more together than they could alone.”
“The seeds will sprout somewhere else,” said former MW Canada president Liz Koop, reflecting on the future of Mennonite women in Canada. Koop said she had joined the organization as a young woman and that without it, “I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”
Jason Martin, director of MC Canada International Witness, thanked the women’s organizations for the $100,000 they had given to overseas mission workers in the past 18 years.
Jeanette Hanson, a long-time Witness worker in China, told the women’s group she was “a grateful recipient of your generosity” over the years. She held up a pen given to her years ago by MW Canada and said that during challenging times she would often pick it up and hold it as a reminder of the support back in Canada.
Members of the nationwide and regional church executive read a litany describing the history of Mennonite women’s groups decade by decade, starting in the 1930s. In a final act of togetherness fitting the theme, the women present sang “In the Bulb There is a Flower.”

Letter to the Women in our Churches

The following letter was prepared by Shirley Redekop, President of Mennonite Women Canada  and Elsie Rempel, Secretary/Treasurer.

To the women in our churches who gather for fellowship, service and mission,

Blessings for the fall season with its energy and new beginnings, even while our gardens yield their harvest and settle into a season of rest. We hope you have received and are enjoying this year's Bible Study Guide, Live Your Call, Embracing God's Mission. My husband, Peter, a seasoned church leader, is enjoying it for his devotional reading and recently asked me, "Are the other BSGs this good too?" If you haven't received the copy we sent to your church, please check with the BSG contact person or the person who distributes the mail. In my church, I added it to the library after introducing it in sharing time. We hope it brings blessing however it is used.

The executive of Mennonite Women Canada is looking forward to an additional executive meeting right after the concluding worship of the Special Delegate Assembly of Mennonite Church Canada this October 15. Please pray for us! We will be bringing a resolution to remain under the organizational umbrella of Mennonite Church Canada at the Assembly and will then meet afterwards to see how our planning needs to adjust to changes the nation wide church has decided on. Therefore, you will not be receiving the customary fall issue of our Connections newsletter before then, but will receive a report from us after that.

In the meantime, it has come to my attention that some of the women's groups in our congregations may not have received our 2016 Annual Report Book, Continuing the Call with its Opportunities for Giving Form on page 20. That was certainly not our intent! While there are many structural changes occurring in our nation wide church, ministry needs and many opportunities continue, and the donations of your women's group remain most desired and appreciated.

As always, we look forward to hearing about what is happening in your area. Mennonite Women Manitoba's Spring Retreat report and the BC Women's Ministry Inspirational Day report are now posted on our blog mennowomencanada.blogspot.com. We hope you will soon see more reports there from across the country.

WEB SITE IS BEING UPDATED

NEW DONATIONS PAGE

If any of you visit our WEB SITE you will have realized that some of our pages are being re-designed by the folks at MC Canada.  Right now we are working on updating our donations page where we list our 'Opportunities for Giving' along with a brief description of the various projects.  We hope to have it ready fairly soon!  Other sections will be updated as we have time to work on them.  For most of us on the executive the past decade has been filled with  many new learning experiences especially in the area of computer and internet technology. So please bear with us as we continue our journey.  We'll let you know as soon as the page is up and running.

Along the Road to Freedom

Artist Ray Dirks has a new exhibit paying tribute to Mennonite parents - mainly women - who fled Russia under Stalin for the safety of Canada.  The exhibit is entitled "Along the Road to Freedom" and runs until January 26, 2013 at the Mennonite Heritage Centre Gallery .  It honours Katherina Dirks Peters, sister to Dirks' grandfather and more than two dozen other women like her, whose stories should not be forgotten.  Click on Along the Road to Freedom  to read more.

SOMETHING NEW FOR OUR BLOG!

While looking over the statistics of our blog I noticed that the most popular postings have been the ones that our "4 Grandmas 4 U" contributed.  Unfortunately they are no longer able to do this.  I have been wondering if we could do a seasonal experiment with fruit recipes.  I have polled the executive and they are willing to submit some recipes.  We would also welcome input and/or comments from any of you. This is not in any way intended to compete with the Mennonite Girls Can Cook whom we endorse and affirm but simply an effort to share our favourite recipes with  those who visit our blog.  I have a couple of rhubarb recipes almost ready to post so check back in a few days!  Each month we will feature a different fruit. We'll start off with rhubarb and perhaps also include a few strawberry recipes.
